NAUMS Conference Summary
Today we leave Dallas and head home to wonderful, dry, mountainess Albuquerque. We can’t wait!
The conference has been a good conference for us. The thing we are always reminded about with these is how needed they are to get refocused and rejuvinated. We always get some great things to take back to the school as we are constatly looking for ways to improve on things. It was encouraging to speak with other schools as we share thoughts and ideas. Our prayer is that the Lord uses us as His instruments in and through this school. We look forward to another exciting year as we come home equipped and prepared to implement things that will, Lord willing, bless all involved.
The 2010 NAUMS Conference
We are in Dallas! Hot and humid in July, isn’t that shocking.
The National Association of University Model Schools (NAUMS) holds an annual conference each year in Texas. It is a great conference filled with wonderful, wise, insightful speakers. This year has a deep line up of breakouts (not sure how to decide).
We are going to be posting here throughout so you can follow what we are learning each day. So stay tuned as the “pre-conference” (which is so “meaty” it is a conference in and of itself) starts tomorrow morning. We will be here through the last session on Friday, so stay tuned and check in periodically.
2010 Growing The Grove
This past Saturday, May 15, was our second annual Oak Grove fundraising event. Entitled “Growing The Grove”, the purpose of the event was to do just that…help us in our efforts to grow the Grove both in size and excellence. The committee who put this together consisted of Susan Beck, Becky King, Leslie Peltier, Leah Rush and Rush Simons. They did an absolutely incredible job. It was truly and event the school can and should take pride in.
Thank you to the committee for all their hours invested in making this such an elegant event. Thanks to all the parents who also helped by collecting auction items, and numerous other behind the scene activities. Thanks to all the donors and sponsors who graciously participated in this event. And most of all, thanks be to God who abundantly blessed Oak Grove through the many folks who attended.
We’ll Remember the Alamo!
In June, three of us from the board went to a Society for Classical Learning (SCL) Conference in San Antonio, Texas. This was by all accounts a fantastic and inspirational conference with top-shelf plenary and breakout speakers, workshops, resources, and most of all ideas!
We were priviledged to listen to the remarkable John Taylor Gatto, author of Dumbing Us Down and The Hidden Curriculum of Compulsory Schooling (The Underground History Of American Education).
In addition to Gatto, we also met with several other authors, curriculum providers, school administrators and teachers. We were able to network with several other classical Christian schools around the country, and learn of the things they were doing. It was encouraging to see so many other schools pioneering in their efforts to classically educate. Also, we were able to share of the great things the Lord has done at Oak Grove in our first year with our friends from Veritas Academy in Austin. The Veritas folks have been instrumental in helping us in the establishment of Oak Grove.
The only problem with attending a conference like this, is coming home and trying to relate, share and implement all of the new ideas we came away with. We’re excited to see what the Lord will do in this next school year as we strive to make all things excellent for God’s glory! Soli Deo Gloria
Interview with Troy Simons
You can listen to a recent interview with Troy Simons, acting headmaster of Oak Grove here.
Welcome to the Oak Grove Blog!
We hope to use this area to simply post things that are going on and seem relevant to us as a Classical Christian School but that don’t really go anywhere else on the site. We’re not going to worry about it if we don’t post every week, or every month, but hopefully we’ll out do ourselves and be posting quite often.
So… as they say, “stay tuned,” and we’ll see where we end up!
